Informing Ourselves About Islam
This community discussion group has completed the two books below and may resume later. If you are interested, please contact the church.
Islam is in the news more than ever before; unfortunately, much of what we hear about Islam as “news” or “information” is a quickly-mixed cocktail of fact, fiction, and fear. In an effort to love our Muslim neighbors as ourselves, the Christian Education Committee launched a study group: “World Religions – Islam.” The purpose of the group was to inform ourselves about the stories, ideas, history, and contemporary issues of Islam, using reputable and accessible sources. The group met on the 4th Tuesdays of the month, 6:30 – 8 p.m., at Corydon Presbyterian and the 2nd Thursday at the same time. Heather Thiessen (Ph.D. Humanities and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Spalding University) facilitated the group. We began by discussing the book No god but God, the Origins, Evolution and Future of Islam by Reza Aslan. We then read Destiny Disrupted, A History of the World through Islamic Eyes by Tamim Ansary.
